Another Perspective on Feeling "Stuck"

I’ve always felt that getting into March is like trying to swim through cement that’s about to set. Even with the hope of what’s to come, there is a sense of stagnation or frustration. The Spring Equinox is in sight, but getting there (especially this year) is sucking every ounce of energy out.

It got me thinking about what stagnation feels like in my body – literally how would I describe it? To me inside my body, it’s like a low grade electrical current you can’t get to stop. It feels jittery – like annoying agitation or a buzzing that’s just not the right vibration.

And, outside of my body, a stagnant external environment might feel like the calm before the storm or swimming in gross pond water.

Stagnation is uncomfortable but it could be viewed as a gift of rest, a pause, a break to catch our breath before more energy is needed again.

The minute I feel stagnant or stuck, I see it as an issue that needs to be fixed, and we hear a lot about "getting unstuck." It's only recently I've realized that perhaps sometimes it's a necessary part of a cycle or process I'm in. By viewing it as bad or something wrong that needs to be fixed, I'm not allowing myself to fully complete a cycle or process.

Of course, all of this reflection led me to some of our core beliefs: that micro informs macro and everything is connected. That how you move in your body and connect with yourself is how you move in your external environment and connect with others and the world. That there can often be a correlation, or mirroring, of internal and external environments, and that molding your movement practice and fitness routine to assist you in the balance, alignment, grounded-ness, freedom, or stability needed in other areas of your life can help you process and heal.

For example, a client working with the concept of improving her personal and professional boundaries had a light bulb moment realizing that in a way, the work we are doing around alignment, balance, and how we move in our bodies and through our environment is directly reflected in her exploration of the concept of boundaries in relationship with others.

Another client, without immediately realizing the genius of her intuition, stated that she felt she needed to step away from the balance work we were doing on the foam roller because she just felt she “needed to be on the ground.” This was right before sharing that she is processing the exhaustion from family dynamics re-emerging in connection with a family elder that is ill.

I was grateful for these concrete reminders of what might sometimes feel like an abstract concept.

Moving Through the Chakras

The core of something is the absolute center. In the physical body, we are referring to the center of gravity, torso musculature, spine, guts, reproductive organs. In the energetic and emotional body, we are referring to our identity, sense of comfort and connection with ourselves, home base, truth.

Our body is our first and last home. Awareness, connection, conversation, and appreciation of that home is vital for thriving and growth. What are the stories we have about our body/ourselves when we look at an external mirror? How do those stories integrate into our body? How is the way we look at and interact with our external environment impacting us in our physical, emotional, energetic bodies - our internal environment, so to speak?

In this 9-week group program, Moving Through the Chakras, we use gentle aligning movement based in foundational Pilates principles, along with guidance from information the chakras provide to heighten your kinesthetic, emotional, and energetic awareness, connect to your physical, emotional, and energetic bodies, and build an internal mirror for continual reflection.

Client Spotlight

This month we are spotlighting the creativity of two separate clients who, unbeknownst to each other, both shared that they were using some of the exercises they’ve learned in session as part of their bedtime ritual or a way to fall back to sleep in the middle of the night. In both cases, we were truly impressed and thrilled to hear about their realization that tapping into their body awareness centered and calmed them to allow for restful sleep.

We are also shining light on them because of something that seems so simple yet happens to be quite hard for a lot of us to learn: thinking and moving intuitively as part of their ritual or formula for their health and nourishment.

Call to Action in the Name of Change

As mindful movement practitioners, we are in the business of supporting and guiding our clients through change.

Taking that devotion and commitment to being active participants in positive change for our clients and industry and applying it towards our community and world, we are taking a moment each month to highlight partnerships we are part of or movements we are in support of so you can check them out, donate, volunteer, or connect however you can.

  • For our Pilates community: Misty Lynne Cauthen has a mentorship program for business owners and entrepreneurs looking to build a structure for themselves and their business that is sustainable, authentic, diverse, and inclusive. (It also covers why D&I are a necessity to build something sustainable and authentic.)

  • You can also check out Sonja R. Price Herbert's work on decolonizing Pilates and fitness. We have learned so much from her in the last six months and continue to come back to her as we get clear about our role in what's wrong with the health and wellness/fitness industry and how we can be part of sustainable change.

  • For our artist/dancer community: Pilates is so intertwined with the arts and especially dance. Our instructor Molly put this organization on our radar and it's a great one to check out: Brown Girls Do Ballet.

  • For our human community: Justice for Elijah McClain. As a massage therapist and musician, Elijah was a fellow healer and artist. We want to highlight continued efforts for accountability in Elijah McClain's death because ultimately we believe that everyone deserves freedom in all its forms.

Find Freedom Through Cycles

We are halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox, and it has us thinking more about something we shared last month: the expectations that typically come with a new year don’t match the energy of the winter. Popular thinking and media messaging encourages us to see the new year as the time to go full throttle, move in a straight line directly towards our goals, stop doing X or start doing Y immediately.

If we take a step back and think about it from a cyclical perspective rather than a linear one, we can see things in a different way.

When you think of the shape of a circle and a line on a piece of paper, what comes to mind?

Line:

  • It has a clear beginning and an end.

  • It can serve as a divider, a way to compartmentalize.

  • It points in only two directions, up and down, side to side – it’s binary.

Circle:

  • There’s no clear beginning or end; you can start and stop at any point.

  • It can serve as a container, or a symbol of movement.

  • It moves in all directions.

Nothing against long lines; that shape can be so beautiful, and it can feel good to make lines in our bodies. However, we are really enjoying the special quality of circles and cycles of life these days.

The cycles of working hard and then scaling down to rest before beginning again – in career, exercise, activism, and home life. The cycles of the season and how they affect our bodies and senses. The cycles of the moon as a way to keep us connected with nature and honoring that we are part of it. And "completing the cycle of stress," which we recently learned about from Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle.

Connecting with the cycles is allowing us and our clients more freedom in how we achieve our goals and fully breathe in whatever intentions we set for ourselves – in fitness or otherwise – it's all tied together. When we use linearity to compartmentalize, it often stifles and binds us, whether in our bodies, in our minds, or in our lives. As the shape itself suggests, there isn’t enough room in a line for full, functional, dynamic movement.

M. Scott Peck (via Bell Hooks) shares in The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity and Love, “the root of the word ‘integrity’ is ‘to integrate,’ emphasizing that this is the opposite of compartmentalization.”

We’ve recently been asking clients to not only think about what shape their body is making but what shape they are drawing in space. It’s been an illuminating experience to see and feel how the quality of movement changes for us to witness and for them to feel, as if they are integrating and interacting with their space differently. It's also a delightfully surprising change in how they experience their environment – a welcomed shift in an extended quarantined winter.

A Different New Year Energy

Over the years, the January newsletter has had a similar theme and energy, even if the content was different. January is “new year/new you” energy, motivation to set new goals for a brand new year ahead, and sky’s the limit.

This past year broke that spell.

In all honesty, going that route full throttle this year doesn’t feel authentic at all. I’ve been struggling to write this because… well… I’ve been pretty angry. Typically in this industry, we are the motivators, the pushers of the bright side, the “buck up, buttercups,” if you will. But by choosing to write this newsletter with my anger in mind instead of waiting for it to go away or forcing out a fake message, I’m able to see past it to also express light – and if anyone needs to hear this: remember it’s ok to be here too, to sit with the anger fully.

That said, I am not without hope and excitement for this new year. As my uncomfortable feelings ebb and flow, I continue to come back to the things I know to be true for me right now: I want to take care of myself, I want to make space to feel good in my body and mind in whatever little way I can, I want to feed my humanness by connecting with and supporting my community however possible.

I am thankful, in a way, that the new year’s spell has been broken. The expectations that typically come with a new year don’t match the energy of the winter. It's still a time of less daylight, the weather is still cold, and nature is still underground. It’s a time for continued restoration, slower movement, and healing.

A recent client conversation comes to mind about how she ended up with the message that only some workouts count and rest is never factored in as part of the things you can choose to do to take care and nourish yourself. Yes, we are in the business of movement, but we advocate for balance in that movement.

Whether you’re feeling hopeful, optimistic, angry, confused, or something else entirely, every January offers a chance for reflection on the year that has passed and intention setting for the year to come. A hell of a lot changed last year. And I – as a person, biz owner, and community member – am challenging myself to do things differently in this new environment.

We are celebrating that we get to be a resource for a former client who moved to Arizona several years ago. We were so sad to see her go, but happy to help her in the search for a new Pilates home, one that’s been serving her well as she reports progressing significantly in her practice.

Recently, when she experienced a foot injury, we returned to some brief work together virtually. We were able to brainstorm movement options that were available to her even with her injury, so that she didn’t feel like she was losing momentum or her mind.

This particular celebration feels extra special because we got the chance to continue to foster a lovely collaborative relationship that started years ago in the studio in NYC and now exists cross-country. Not to mention we turned a situation that felt really anxiety provoking and disappointing into something totally manageable creating a sense of relief.

Witchy Wednesday

We really enjoyed the last year of playing with something completely new in the physical and virtual studio through our monthly Witchy Wednesday. Thank you so much for everyone who participated!

Honoring a new year intention to make more decisions from intuition, we are transmuting Witchy Wednesday into a new monthly group gathering. Stay tuned for more info on that!

Using Your Body to Heal Your Body

There’s been a lot of talk about immunity lately, as the world collectively watches the development and potential distribution of a precious vaccine during a not-so-typical cold and flu season. It got me thinking about what it means to be immune.

My first thought is, “Not affected. Untouchable.”

In the case of vaccines, in general, we use the thing we are trying to protect ourselves from as the protection. How poetic! We transform the thing that is doing harm into the thing that protects us from harm. We bring the threat closer to us and use it as protection.

To me, this is a kind of acknowledgement that we are, indeed, susceptible. That getting harmed or getting sick is inevitable. So if we accept the inevitable, that we aren’t untouchable, we create grounded space for ourselves to address how we handle the inevitable. It gives us a better chance of getting through it with less harm.

This concept is emerging in our work as mindful movement practitioners. Stress is inevitable. Injuries and misalignments are inevitable - this is being human. Our approach to prevention and healing acknowledges this reality and aims to support everyone we work with by providing the tools to move through that reality with more ease and grace. We help you use your body to heal your body.

To quote one of our clients:

You can feel your body recalibrating when you’re in the thick of darkness. You can feel it changing. That’s when growth happens there.
— Laurie

New in 2021: Moving Through the Chakras

Like many others, 2020 has been a year of exploration for us. We were honored that, through our exploration, we were able to collaborate with The Alchemist’s Kitchen for two mindful movement workshops in November.

These workshops laid the groundwork for a new group program coming in 2021: Moving Through the Chakras.

Each week for eight weeks, we will meet in our Zoom studio to use gentle aligning movement based in foundational Pilates principles, along with guidance from information the chakras provide to heighten your kinesthetic, emotional, and energetic awareness, connect to your physical, emotional, and energetic bodies, and build an internal mirror for continual reflection. In addition, you’ll receive tools and guidance to help you delve into the information and reflections that come up each week.

(Please note that this is not an in-depth course on the meaning and history of the chakras. Instead, the parallels of the chakra system to Pilates principles informs a creative and broadened way to help build awareness of the body.)

If you missed the workshops and want to get a better sense of what this type of work is all about, be sure to check out our IG Live with TAK here.

This month we are celebrating a husband and wife duo who have been working out together at home for the better part of this year. Despite the fact that their bodies need very different things and they approach exercise quite differently, they love coming together for an hour each week to take care of themselves.

They’ve adapted quite well to their home workouts, and we’ve loved seeing how they help each other through it and rise to the occasion to try new things together!

Witchy Wednesday

We are celebrating our 12th and final circle for 2020 on Wednesday, December 16 at 8:00pm EST.

As we gather together in support of each other, we will be in the first beams of light after the New Moon on December 14. This new moon/new lunar cycle also happens at the end of the 2020 calendar year as we approach the shortest days of winter leading up to the Winter Solstice. Beginning of a lunar cycle, end of a calendar cycle, end of a solstice cycle.

In the darkness of new moon energy, in the darkness of the shortest days of the year, we will go through some gentle rituals and visualization together as we continue to explore what tangible outcomes mean to each of us individually and collectively.
"Our way of being is the tangible outcome." - adrienne maree brown

Sign up below and save the date for our first moon gathering of the new year: Wednesday, January 13, 2021.

Honoring the Season of Transmutation

During a recent run, I remembered and reveled in how much I love the smell of leaves on the ground. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this is actually the smell of death, decomposition, and transmutation. It’s the smell of nature’s last exhale for this cycle and a symbol of its time of rest and regeneration.

To me, it’s a perfect example of how important a mindful movement practice is. It serves as a necessary balance to high impact or dynamic workouts, as well as the general expectation that we always be “on,” productive, and available in our professional and personal lives. We need the balance in a movement practice that provides rest and regeneration so that we avoid burnout and/or injury.

Your body will eventually force you in one way or another to slow down. Rather than resist the rest part of a cycle what happens when you embrace and enjoy it?

As you know, we’ve been going through our own process of transmutation here at The Co. Just a few months ago, we announced an expansion to our offerings that include more healing modalities and create accessibility in the way of duets, customized small group classes in our Pilates Party, Corporate Wellness workshops, and Reiki energy healing sessions.

(Remember that you can always email us if you’re interested in learning more! Plus, any current client who refers someone to these new offerings can receive an extra session to their package if the referral signs up.)

This month, I would like to highlight our new Reiki offerings. I received my first round of Level 1 training in Reiki from Marilyn Vega in 2012. I was attracted to it after several healing sessions with her and felt it was a powerful way for me to understand my energetic and emotional body more.

I approached my training as a way to take care of myself; after only 2.5 years in New York, I was still adjusting to the city, how it affected me, and all the energy I used working long hours one on one with people. I used it as a way to stay balanced, learn more about my subtle body, and go deeper into what I understood about my body, well beyond the physical.

My second round of training came from one of my mentors, Victoria Libertore, in Level 1 and Level 2 on my birthday in 2018. Since learning more about the origin and lineage of Reiki, and how it came to be more widely practiced in the west, I have come to appreciate even more how this simple practice opens doors for clarity, peace, and agency in the body and mind. These are forms of deep healing, as they can majorly shift our perspectives and our relationship to ourselves and our identities. While I’ve integrated Reiki into my mindful movement sessions here and there for a while, this year has called me to step out of my shell more and offer this practice more fully.

All current clients have a complimentary session available to them if they would like to learn more, or you can gift it to a family/friend in need of extra support.

Client Spotlight

Today we are celebrating a client that came to us with chronic back pain. Her experience of it felt mysterious and frustrating, as there never seemed to be a connection between what she did in her body and the pain she felt. Our work together was encouraging because she almost always felt better and lighter afterwards. When the pandemic hit and she relocated to another state, she was unsure if online sessions would work for her but was open to trying.

We get so excited talking about her work since transitioning online because it’s truly amazing what she has been able to work through and progress into!

In one of her recent sessions, she expressed joy in realizing that her body will not always respond to the same formula of exercise prescription the same way. Now she has greater knowledge of what movement and exercises she can explore to find relief from discomfort outside of our sessions. She finally feels like she has agency in and a relationship with her body that is actually like a dialogue rather than constant interruption.

Pilates and Sex

I took some time to sit down and chat with sexologist Liz Mallers about what Pilates/mindful movement and sexual health have to do with each other, how pain can often inform us more than pleasure, and how we aim to be part of the shift that helps clients use pleasure as their guide in their bodies and their evolution. Watch part 1 here and part 2 here.

#WitchyWednesday

Our next Witchy Wednesday Women's Circle is coming up on Wednesday, November 18 at 8:00pm EST.

This month, we are circling up just after the new moon in Scorpio on Saturday, November 14th. This means there will be the slightest sliver of light shining on themes of Scorpio, the Death card, the Phoenix, and the highest self version of the Emperor archetype.

Together, we will breathe in the last fall breezes as we prepare for Winter Solstice and honor all the shadow work we’ve done to prepare for shorter days and longer nights. This slower and darker time in the moon cycle matches this time in our seasonal cycle. We are finishing up our harvesting for the year, enjoying that harvest, and preparing for next year's crop.

In addition to this symbolic cyclical reflection, we are simply coming together this month to hold space and support each other. To say that it was a turbulent start to the month is an understatement. My hope is that this Witchy Wednesday will provide a moment of solace and rejuvenation for the undeniable work we still collectively have ahead of us, including how we can support VoteForward’s next round of organizing to mobilize voting in Georgia’s special election.

Workshops With The Alchemist’s Kitchen

I am truly ecstatic to share that I’ll be partnering with The Alchemist’s Kitchen to lead two workshops in November:

  • Moving Through The Chakras on Saturday, November 14th at 10:00 AM EST

  • Mindful Movement For Better Sex on Saturday, November 21st at 10:00 AM EST

Be sure to secure your spot now that registration is open.

Opportunities to Move (and Shift Your Identity)

This month marks seasonal transition. The smells change, the flavors change, the temperatures change – it’s boot and sweater season! There is a slowing down or lessening of movement; from a basic physiological standpoint, we all move more slowly in colder temperature (even our cells). You can slow swelling with ice just as you can slow the cooking process with cold water.

This also happens to be Osteoporosis Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In our work with clients living with these diagnoses, we have found that movement is deeply important. Movement can not only support prevention and rehabilitation, but there is also an added layer of healing how their identity changes based on how their body changes. When someone accepts “I have breast cancer” or “I have osteoporosis,” they might cycle through some of these thoughts:
- I have to have surgery.
- I have to have chemo/radiation.
- My body is going to change its composition forever.
- My day to day routine will change, and I may not be able to do the things I need/want for a while.
OR
- I had no idea my bones were at risk.
- I have to be very careful how I move in my body.
- I can’t do the exercise or activities I used to.
- My bones are vulnerable.

When I think of the impact of these two diagnoses, I see how it connects to this season of slowing down, as well as the work we do with our clients. Here are some of the ways these are all connected.

Slowing Down
We often ask clients to slow down their movement in an exercise so that they can more consciously feel their body during the motion and make corrections as needed. Slowing down the pace of movement also gives them a chance to notice how their body responds as the exercise progresses – how does the feeling of the movement change over repetition/time? A client recently told us she is noticing a new relationship with nature since she decided to take up longer walks over running. Another client shared that the act of physically slowing down is informing her meditation practice. You can even extend this idea to how our emotions inform our actions.

Going Inward
This is the act of building an internal mirror. By turning your focus inward, you can practice building awareness of your body in space and how your body feels doing an exercise. It also builds up trust or intuition in your body.

Body’s Relationship to Identity
For better or worse, what our bodies are and are not able to do physically can often inform how we label ourselves and how we think of our identity. In this way, our physical body can contain a story about who we are or who we think we are.

For example: I have a herniated disc. I have back pain that I feel in everything I do. I am injured. I cannot play tennis anymore. I can’t go to the gym. It’s hard to walk. I can’t pick things up by myself. I am reliant on others. I am not strong. I am fragile. I am not well. I am less than I used to be.

Or: I don’t have any injuries. I can do all my favorite things without pain (pain doesn’t even occur to me). I am a tennis player. I am a runner. I am strong and self-sufficient. I am healthy.

It’s important to add that these thoughts and ideas do not just happen internally. There are messages everywhere about what we are capable of and where our bodies are welcome – workout apparel with models of only one tiny body type and skin color, machines that are not functional/accessible for the vastly varying bodies that could benefit from a mindful movement practice like Pilates, all or nothing language communicating that only some are capable. This messaging reinforces how we conceive of our identities, making it even more important to practice slowing down and going inward so that we can see ourselves as whole and strong regardless of what our bodies can and can’t do in any given moment.

Client Spotlight

This month, we are celebrating a client that came to us with pelvic floor dysfunction that was getting in the way of her day to day life and taking up lots of mental space to merely manage. Recently, we’ve been noticing in sessions how her association with pain, soreness, and “flare ups” has changed drastically. She has gone from being very nervous about small exercises and isolated movement to strengthen her hips, to doing more intense at-home workouts, recognizing when she needs to make modifications and making them, and coming out of the workouts the next day feeling good about her soreness rather than scared.

Seeing this progress in herself has led her to the goal of evolving our work to prepare her to rekindle her childhood relationship with ice skating! We are very excited for her!

Healing Movement Sessions for Breast Cancer

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re offering complimentary sessions to anyone who has been or is currently going through treatment for breast cancer for the last two weeks of October. If you would like to book a session to learn how you can move through the Pilates method in a safe way, address specific issues related to your treatment process, and improve how you move through your day to day, please email us at move@thecopilates.com.

Beautiful Bones Workshop

When The Co team member, Colleen, was diagnosed with osteoporosis a little over a year ago after a routine bone density test, it came as quite a surprise. Colleen has always been active, weight trained, and had virtually no symptoms. To realize that your bones – the building blocks of stability – are unstable is emotionally and physically challenging, to say the least.

Colleen's osteoporosis has influenced her approach for moving her body and how she teaches others to move. It has also inspired her to shed more light on what's possible despite this diagnosis, which is why we are so excited that she’s leading the second iteration of this very special workshop this month!

Join us on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30pm EDT to learn what an osteoporosis diagnosis means, how it can affect your identity and relationship with your body, and how to move through it safely. This workshop will be part informational and part conversational, with an opportunity to move this knowledge through your body at the end.

An Inch Wide and a Mile Deep

While reading the book Emergent Strategy, I was reminded of the idea “a mile wide and an inch deep” vs. “an inch wide and a mile deep.” It got me thinking about how we relate to ourselves and how our studio mission is evolving.

Let me say first that I love that there is so much interest and passion for fitness in NYC and beyond. I love that there are so many people getting creative, innovating, and making different approaches accessible with the goal to inspire people to move. However, it’s no secret that there’s a certain kind of body that’s revered and exemplified as fit (especially the Eurocentric view of the ballerina as the ideal Pilates body), and that we are a culture of PUSH, DRIVE, DIG!!! I’m guilty of teaching it, participating in it, and revering it myself.

While I love a workout that gets me to expel energy, it’s a type of work that doesn’t leave a ton of room for deep connection. The popular image and approach stays relatively on the surface, quite literally; many workouts focus on the anatomically superficial muscles we see just under the skin rather than the deeper, smaller, more subtle muscles closer to our skeleton.

Can you describe your relationship with your body as “inch wide and mile deep”?

What if we were vulnerable and compassionate with ourselves as a practice? What if our health goals came from a place of abundance, acceptance, and pleasure rather than scarcity, judgement, or pain?

For example: “I don’t like the way I look or feel; I’ll feel better if I look this way.” “I’ve had this back pain for so long with no answers; I just don’t want to be in pain anymore.”
Versus: “I appreciate my body the way that it is, and I want to learn what more is possible.” “Not only do I want to be pain free, I also want to learn how to feel good in my body again.”

This is where the evolving mission of The Co Pilates comes in.

I’m going to say what I'm probably not supposed to say here: Pilates isn’t “the thing.” What we are offering is a Pilates-based practice to get to “the thing.”

"The Thing" is awareness, learning what you didn't know you didn't know. It's a new way to practice mindfulness, growing a relationship with yourself as a small act of rebellion that has positive ripple effects in your/the world.

Our entire team has a foundation in teaching Pilates, but we also have other unique skills that allow us to be facilitators and guides as you become an active participant in a new kind of relationship with yourself. A mindful movement practice is a way to gain insight to your behavior and movement patterns, be more aware of them on a regular basis, be able to observe them without judgement, ask critical questions of them with curiosity, and evolve them for the better.

At The Co Pilates, we are deeply intrigued and excited by the potential ripple effects that come from a heightened state of awareness of your body, mind, and their interplay. What if everyone walked out into the world from a place of deeper connection to their bodies – to themselves? Could it change the way you interact with friends, family, co-workers, your community? Could it change the way you process stress and difficult emotions? Could it change the choices you make?

Our hypothesis is that if we become more aware and connected to the reality that each piece, system, and cell of our body is interconnected (and dis-ease in one segment affects the whole), we can more easily accept and apply that same truth to each other and the entirety of our communities. We are all connected.

If I may be so bold as to quote Beyonce, "When you love me, you love yourself."

We are on a mission to be part of that change from the one on one interaction of instructor to client (micro) to our partnerships with organizations dedicated to making our community, industry, and country more safe and equitable (macro). Adrienne Maree Brown, author of Emergent Strategy says that we can “unlock crucial understanding about our own humanity if we pay closer attention to this body we are in.” I tend to agree with her.

Client Spotlight

Recently, a client who has been an avid weightlifter shared that the fine-tuned movements he has done at The Co have helped him face a childhood fear of not being coordinated enough. There’s a deep-seated story about his body and his abilities as a person; his identity is embedded in those movements.

We aren’t just doing Pilates anymore – we are getting to The Thing. This work has allowed him not just to learn to move more efficiently and wholly so that he can recover from and prevent injury (physical body), but also dig up, feel, and process a childhood fear (emotional body), and, through practice of the movement, allow himself to step away from that fear and feel the accomplishment and progress in his body, therefore writing a new story about his body and identity (energetic body).

As a result, we have witnessed him speaking differently about himself in this subtle way and seen his interaction with exercises he used to despise change to a pleasurable experience. These are the goals we want to be part of accomplishing. The point of this work is to be a facilitator for wholeness, not perfection, not absolute symmetry, not mastery, not replicating how I look when I do the movement, but how does the movement feel in your body when you do it?

#WitchyWednesday

On Wednesday, October 14 at 8:00pm EDT, I will be hosting another Witchy Wednesday Women's Circle!

This month is a powerful one for manifestation and reflection with two full moons – one right at the beginning and another at the very end – with a new moon in the middle. We will be circling up to contemplate this in between as a "Bridge Moon," as Sarah Faith Gottessdiener, author of Many Moons Lunar Planner, refers to it. With a bridge moon in a bridge month, how can we serve as a bridge, and what bridges do we need for real change and evolution for our highest good and the highest good of all?

In addition to guidance from an oracle deck and tapping into our own intuition through guided meditation, we will also be integrating action steps in support of our larger collective from League of Women Voters and Grassroots Law Project. As we enter Libra season, which is associated with the idea of balance, please consider joining us in 90 minutes of collectively practicing balance in taking care of yourself and our larger community.

And if this isn't your thing, it feels like too much right now, you can't make it, or you have family/friends who are struggling and/or are ill, I'm offering to hold space in the circle, send Reiki, and include you/them in our "group shout out." If this is something you'd be interested in, simply reply to this email and I'll include you.

A Love Letter to Endings

NYC.jpg

August 2020 marks the six year anniversary of The Co Pilates' inception. Six years ago, I made the scary decision many in my industry make to go out on my own. Operating out of a new studio, with a new name, a new commitment to professional evolution in mindful movement, but in the same vibrant Union Square, Manhattan. December 2015 would see me move right back into the studio I had left, with a new partnership in the space, a new look for the space, but same lovely Union Square. July 2019 would see me take over the studio space yet again, this time completely on my own, renewing and deepening a longtime partnership in the wellness space the studio called home, but same familiar Union Square.

How fitting that almost six years to the day, I would break down and pack up every last little piece of the studio and say goodbye to Union Square as my daily stomping ground.

How fitting that on the month of my “work anniversary,” as LinkedIn calls it, I would close the door to a space I’ve called my professional home for 10 years.

It was the place of one of my first interviews when I was brand spanking new to NYC. It’s seen me go through so much growth in my personal and professional life. It’s been my home base for so many trying and celebratory times. This space, those walls, watched me take on New York and grow up. If walls could talk...

Yes, this is sad to say the least. Goodbyes and endings have a certain amount of inherent sadness to them. Zooming out (no pun intended), I not only have some sadness for my own endings but for all the other businesses in NYC, and Union Square specifically, that are doing the same exact thing. And yet, I think it’s important to name THE THING. We are living in the time of a pandemic; this is the reality, plain and simple.

Even though this reality is a heavy weight none of us still fully know how to interact with or carry, I also have so much peace, gratitude, and hope within this reality and ending.

The fact is, I’ve been in that space and in that neighborhood for 10 years, it’s ok to be done. This is not the end of our studio, our work, or our community, it is just the end of the work that space was allowing us to do. Something I’ve come to very deeply appreciate despite all the glitches is that we are now operating in spaces all over the country in multiple time zones. What an amazing thing to be able to say at a time like this! I am so appreciative of all of the clients, colleagues, and collaborators that have been working with us and supporting us throughout this year.

I have been feeling change and expansion coming for a while but was never really sure when it would finally land and what it would look like. I can say with total sincerity that I am thankful for this ending and the chance for new opportunities to evolve the work we’ve been doing in that sweet little space in Union Square for so long.

With Every Ending, There Is a Beginning

We are excited to share with you new ideas and offerings we are creating as we spread our wings into this new, growing virtual studio. We are now available to be a resource for corporate wellness, whether that be a one-time informative Lunch and Learn or an ongoing specialized class for team building and an addition to healthy corporate community.

In addition, while I have never hidden my background and approach, the energy work of Reiki has never been something I’ve actively advertised as its own offering. The times, they are a-changing. I’m now offering energy healing sessions through the modality of Reiki as its own experience on my schedule.

We can’t gush enough about the progress we’ve seen from our clients over the past few months. We’ve even started sharing it on our Instagram stories! Be sure to follow us to check out some of their success stories.

#WitchyWednesday

On Wednesday, September 16 at 8:00pm EDT, I will be hosting another Witchy Wednesday Women's Circle!

This new moon comes just a week before the Autumn Equinox and Harvest Full Moon. It tells us that change is coming, yet again. We will use this time to honor the seeds we've planted, how they've grown, and the harvest that is coming in. We will also take this opportunity to reflect on the differences between what we thought we would be harvesting and what we are actually harvesting.

What we've been exploring fairly consistently in our new moon circles is the "in between" or the "unseen": What's in the empty room, the void? What's in the gray area between the light and the dark, the space between our beliefs and our reality? What untapped power lies in the unseen? The new moon is a great time to feel into this. Let's explore it together.

I hope you will consider joining us!

The Work Is Never Over

Coming back to the studio for the first time in three months felt like visiting a childhood home – it had a feeling of “lots of memories but we don’t live there anymore.” After tending to my thirsty plants and looking through all the mail, I sat down to reconnect with the space.

This space has been a home to me almost the entire 11 years I’ve lived in NYC. It has been a touchstone for all of my development here.

In a time when we are using our personal spaces for our office, daycare, gym, meditation, play, activism, restaurants, movie theaters, etc., it got me thinking about the way spaces are set up to function, the intention of a space, the energy a space can hold, and the way it can make you feel.

My sweet little space is one where seemingly small adjustments are a huge accomplishment. Where you can come to feel supported and achieve a lot against resistance (a spring metaphor – wink!). A place where transmutation is witnessed:

  • Broken body systems/mechanics become whole

  • Pain turns to strength

  • Anxiety turns to peace/calm

  • Fogginess turns into clarity

  • “I can’t” becomes “I can”

  • Disconnection turns into alignment

These things are possible anywhere. It’s about the intention and believing in a little bit of magic. Showing up with curiosity about the unknown. Commitment to working for big little wins, even when it takes time to find out that if you move just a liiiiittle to the left, you’ll find your sweet spot. All the time it took wasn’t a waste; the win is big because of the time you spent in the process of discovery.

The work is never over.

Just like the work of body awareness and mindful movement within a Pilates practice offer endless evolution, the work of highlighting and changing the inequity in the fitness and Pilates industry does not stop.

I recently had a chance to attend an Anti-Racism in Pilates workshop with Sonja Herbert of Black Girl Pilates and Commando Fitness Collective. One eye-opening highlight was Sonja breaking down how Pilates has morphed to covet and revere the dancer body – long and lean – as the ideal way to look, and how the meaning of health gets attached to that “look.” It perpetuates an ideal that you aren’t whole until you look a certain way, and that message is especially harmful and alienating to the BIPOC community.

I’ve spent the better part of my teaching career saying things like, “I won’t promise you a six-pack in ten sessions because that’s a lie. But here are more holistic ways we can measure progress…” What I realize now is that this only happens in person. I have not always been loud and clear on all of my platforms about how we at The Co Pilates actively push back and change the “long and lean” narrative. For anyone reading who hasn’t worked with us directly, know that we are in the business of helping you to know yourself better and feel better in your body. From that place, lots of other fitness goals can be achieved. It’s not the other way around.

However you may be connected to the Pilates community, please consider joining me in supporting Black Girl Pilates’ 3rd annual conference and contributing to Sonja’s scholarship fund for 20 Black instructors to attend.

Check Us Out!

We were so honored to do our first ever Instagram Live with Dr. Alex Duma of FICS and to take part in Act 2 Interviews with Sofia Negron. If you’d like to hear our creation story as a business and studio, a discussion around what virtual Pilates life is like, or all about our new #pilatesparty offer, check out those interviews. You can also catch me and Molly testing out a Ballet Barre sequence here. Try it out and let us know what you think!

#WitchyWednesday

We’re coming up on the first New Moon after a really intense eclipse season. To honor this moon, support each other in renewal, and cultivate new opportunities and new growth, we’ll be circling up on Wednesday, July 22 at 8:00pm EDT.

We are halfway through the year and in the thick of a new landscape. There is no going back, despite any pull or longing you may have. We will use this time together to thank and honor that time and also challenge ourselves to keep fully stepping into what is the “now.”

If you’d like to prepare and align with the New Moon on the exact day (July 20), take some time to reflect and/or journal on what needs to be released around you, and ways you can neutralize adversaries and reduce harm. The time just before, during, and after a New Moon is a great time to fully embrace rest and solitude – if only for a moment.

Seeds of Change

Typically, this is the season when the seeds you’ve planted start to emerge, when it’s time to tend to your plants so they can produce fruit. The trees are in their brightest green, the air is getting warmer, and we feel drawn to be outside more. It’s a shift we all feel in one way, shape, or form, and it signifies change.

As I write this, the need for change in NYC, in the US, and really everywhere is more than apparent. It’s also way overdue. So, where do I begin as a white woman and biz owner? Where do we begin as a biz in an industry that notoriously lacks diversity?

I believe it can start by sharing the experiences and creative evolution stories of women of color in our industry, like the development of Black Girl Pilates by Sonja Herbert, or Chrissy King’s work to educate people like me on how to be meaningfully anti-racist in the fitness industry. It means highlighting organizations like Yoga Foster, “a nonprofit that provides free yoga training and curriculum to teachers who work at underserved schools in marginalized communities,” or learning from WOC leaders in our community how to step up the work we do with Green Hope Services for Women. It means taking a little time to research and support WOC workout brands like Culture Fit. It means stepping out of the safety and isolation of our little studio and putting my money where my mouth is when it comes to the magic of collaboration and the power of the collective.

I acknowledge that I’m late to the game when it comes to addressing racism head on and as a true public health issue. These are the first seeds of change we are dedicated to tending.

Our whole approach to each client’s program is based on the understanding that every body is different and unique in its experience. We are committed to doing our part to make sure our studio and our industry truly and fully reflects that fact.

#KnowYourself #LookBetter

Last week, we had some big wins we want to celebrate!

  1. One client now operating out of Massachusetts was still rehabbing a rotator cuff injury when he relocated. Through continued PT support and our online sessions, he’s been able to understand how to make adjustments to his gardening and is now lifting bags of soil with relative ease.

  2. Another client, on a long journey with pelvic floor and hip pain, experienced some great progress in the really nuanced work we’ve been doing both releasing and strengthening the intricate network of muscles supporting her. With some new cues, she reported an improvement in the quality of her muscle contraction and decreased pain – the likes of which she hasn’t experienced in years.

  3. A new addition to our Tuesday night “Pilates for Better Sex” class gave us some great feedback saying, “Usually people do not discuss pelvic floor and sex, and I really appreciated that you did. It is an awkward topic to bridge but I have a good amount of pain with sex. I try to ignore the pain but it causes stress and a negative association with sex. I was really excited that you told me about options I have. Thank you again for all your help.”
